چکیده

Abstract. ???????Late Paleocene deposition of an organic-rich sedimentary facies on the continental shelf and slope New Zealand eastern Australia has been linked to short-lived climatic cooling terrestrial denudation following sea level fall. Recent studies confirm that organic matter in this facies, termed “Waipawa organofacies”, is primarily origin, with a minor marine component. It also unusually enriched 13C. In study we address cause enrichment. For Waipawa organofacies its bounding Taylor White section, Hawke's Bay, paired palynofacies carbon isotope analysis heavy liquid-separated density fractions indicate heaviest ?13C values are associated degraded phytoclasts (woody plant matter) 13C enrichment may be partly due lignin degradation. Compound-specific stable analyses samples from mid-Waipara (Canterbury) sections display similar trends further reveal residual ? 2.5 ‰ higher biomarkers (long chain n-alkanes fatty acids) 2 ‰–5 change subordinate biomarkers. Using relationship between atmospheric CO2 C3 tissue values, determine 3 increase represent 35 % decrease CO2. Refined age control for indicates occurred 59.2 58.5 Ma, which coincides interval carbonate dissolution deep oxygen maximum (POIM, 59.7–58.1 Ma) onset (PCIM, 59.3–57.4 Ma). This association suggests during time cool conditions increased burial. supported by published TEX86-based surface temperatures pronounced regional deposition. We suggest reduced greenhouse gas emissions volcanism accelerated burial, tectonic factors, resulted global cooling, growth ephemeral ice sheets fall level. Accompanying erosion deep-sea sediment archives have hidden evidence “hypothermal” event until now.

Intraoceanic subduction spanned the Pacific in the Late Cretaceous–Paleocene

The notorious ~60° bend separating the Hawaiian and Emperor chains marked a prominent change in the motion of the Pacific plate at ~47 Ma (million years ago), but the origin of that change remains an outstanding controversy that bears on the nature of major plate reorganizations. Lesser known but equally significant is a conundrum posed by the pre-bend (~80 to 47 Ma) motion of the Pacific plate...

Ancient tortoise hunting in the southwest Pacific

We report the unprecedented Lapita exploitation and subsequent extinction of large megafauna tortoises (?Meiolania damelipi) on tropical islands during the late Holocene over a 281,000 km2 region of the southwest Pacific spanning from the Vanuatu archipelago to Viti Levu in Fiji. Zooarchaeological analyses have identified seven early archaeological sites with the remains of this distinctive hor...

Middle and Late Holocene dry climatic events in the Central Zagros

Climate, as the average temperature or precipitation over a long period of time, is constantly fluctuating and changing. There is a complex relationship between climate change and human biological and cultural reactions (Weeks and Petrie, 2018). Increased dry conditions in the subtropics is one of the consequences of climate change that has been predicted by various models. While using th...

Cenozoic Expansion of Grasslands and Climatic Cooling

Mountains, ocean currents, forests, and swamps have played an important role in regulating global climate for hundreds of millions of years, but the truly novel event of the Cenozoic was the evolution and expansion of grasslands, with their uniquely coevolved grasses and grazers. Neogene expansion of the climatic and geographic range of grasslands at the expense of woodlands is now revealed by ...

Pacific Salmon in Aquatic and Terrestrial Ecosystems

almon runs in the Pacific Northwest have been declining for decades, so much so that many runs are threatened or endangered; others have been completely extirpated (Nehlsen et al. 1991). This “salmon crisis” looms large in the public eye, because it has serious and wideranging economic, cultural, and ecological repercussions. Billions of dollars have gone into industrial and agricultural projec...
